The idea for the Illustrious Women series came to me in early 2017. It seemed there was a collective need to celebrate the feminine, and I wanted to draw attention to and educate myself about the many women who have gone before me- women who lived the lives they wanted to and bettered the world in the process.

Rukmini Devi, dancer & animal rights activist. This was a woman unafraid to follow her heart. She didn't begin dancing until she was nearly 30 and the form of dance she chose, Bharatnatyam, was not considered an appropriate pursuit for someone of her background. Still, she was responsible for revitalizing it and making it popular again around the world. She also worked to help animals and helped set up The Animal Welfare Board of India.
