The idea for the Illustrious Women series came to me in early 2017. It seemed there was a collective need to celebrate the feminine, and I wanted to draw attention to and educate myself about the many women who have gone before me- women who lived the lives they wanted to and bettered the world in the process.

Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to run the Boston Marathon. The race director attempted to prevent her running by physically attacking her, trying to rip off her race bib and force her out of the race, but she prevailed. She changed the game for women in running, and went on to finish 39 more marathons, winning the New York Marathon in 1974. She later created women’s only races that involved over a million women in 27 countries, then launched a career as a TV commentator and public speaker. In 2017 she ran the Boston Marathon once again, on the 50th anniversary of her achievement and at 70 years of age. This incredible athlete finished the run in just over 4 and 1/2 hours, despite only sleeping a few hours a night in the weeks leading up to the event because of her foundation and media work.
