Yayoi Kusama

The idea for the Illustrious Women series came to me in early 2017. It seemed there was a collective need to celebrate the feminine, and I wanted to draw attention to and educate myself about the many women who have gone before me- women who lived the lives they wanted to and bettered the world in the process.

Yayoi Kusama has been making art for decades and continues to do so today, at almost ninety, from her studio near the mental hospital where she has lived for the past 40 years. This prolific artist with her signature bright bob has created public and commercial art, sculpture, installations, illustration, painting, fashion poetry, novels, films, and performance art. She is well-known for her obsession with dots, which she has seen in hallucinations since childhood and which she uses to explore the idea of self-obliteration. Of her dots she has said, “Polka dots are a way to infinity”.

This is an original work of art and may show evidence of the painting process such as tiny flecks of paint or light pencil marks, which are considered part of the work. Please see detail photos or contact with any questions.
