The idea for the Illustrious Women series came to me in early 2017. It seemed there was a collective need to celebrate the feminine, and I wanted to draw attention to and educate myself about the many women who have gone before me- women who lived the lives they wanted to and bettered the world in the process.

Harriet Tubman

  • Paper is approximately 5x6 inches; shown in 10x12 frames
  • Signed on reverse
  • Unframed

Harriet Tubman was born into slavery around 1820, but she was destined for freedom instead. She was to spend most of her life fighting against the system that subjugated her and her loved ones. 💪🏾When she was in her early twenties, she and her brothers escaped to the North most likely via the Underground Railroad, which she later returned to multiple times and used to help dozens of others to find their freedom. She was never caught and during the civil war her knowledge of these underground tunnels and the south allowed her to work as a spy and guerilla operative for the Union. In addition, her training as a nurse allowed her to treat those in need in the front lines. 👩🏾‍⚕️After the war, she turned her efforts to fighting for women’s rights with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, all the while caring for the elderly, founding a care home for the aged, and adopting a child. ♥️As the first African American woman to serve in the military, she was buried with full military honors at the end of her life in 1913.
